Overview
Bending the Curve (BtC): Climate Change Solutions is a multifaceted education project designed to empower a million climate champions across the world to solve the climate change problem. It draws inspiration from the report Bending the Curve: 10 Scalable Solutions, written by 50 University of California (UC) academics in natural sciences including engineering and technology, social sciences, and humanities. Bending the Curve is a spin-off from the Carbon Neutrality Initiative of the University of California.
The project began with a single for-credit hybrid undergraduate course taught at the UC. To scale it to the rest of the nation and the world, it has expanded in scope to include an online version of the course, an open-source digital textbook available for download through the California Digital Library, and a massive open online course (MOOC) — ENROLL NOW!
The education project provides students with the tools to develop climate change solutions in different disciplines: science pathways; societal transformation; governance; market instruments; technology measures; and ecosystem management.
To explore its portability, the hybrid course was piloted and is now being licensed at Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden; San Diego State University, San Diego, CA; National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan; and MiraCosta College, San Diego, CA.
If you are interested in licensing the hybrid course to offer it for credit at your own institution, please contact us at ILTI@ucop.edu.
BtC Hybrid Course
The original Bending the Curve: Climate Change Solutions course consists of 18 original video lectures from 23 UC researchers and academics. Students watch assigned lectures in advance, then come to class for rich discussions facilitated by the instructor. Content emphasizes both climate knowledge and solutions across a wide range of academic disciplines, and enables students to showcase their learning in a capstone project. Since its launch in 2018 it has been offered on five UC campuses and has been piloted elsewhere in California (and Taiwan).
BtC Online Course
The online version of the course uses the hybrid course as its base and optimizes the design for a fully digital learning environment. Lecture videos remain as the foundation of the course’s content, and students are expected to work together to prepare for and actively participate in live sessions hosted via video conference. The shift to solely online interactions will provide access for a greater number of students in a wide range of disciplines and geographical locations. Digital Textbook
The Bending the Curve: Climate Change Solutions digital textbook is intended as a companion piece to the BtC Hybrid and BtC Online courses. It is a book in PDF format that consists of 15 chapters, which align with the major topics found in the course. When published, it will be freely available worldwide through a Creative Commons license via the California Digital Library.
MOOC
A MOOC specialization based on the Bending the Curve: Climate Change Solutions course is currently being designed. It will consist of a series of courses that are derived from the original hybrid course. Learners will be able to take one (or multiple courses) for free, or they can pay to earn a certificate in a Climate Change Solutions specialization. – ENROLL NOW!
